Nakhumicha comes to the rescue of struggling Nangina Mission Hospital

In a bold step to tame the tendency that saw faith-based hospitals bearing the brunt of systemic collapse in health and general development in previous administrations, Cabinet Secretary for Health Nakhumicha Wafula has moved with speed to mount a resolute campaign partnership between the Government and the said facilities in a crucial move aimed at attaining Universal Health Coverage.

On Thursday, she toured Nangina Mission Hospital in Busia where she emphasized the significant role played by medical private sector in provision of quality health care towards realisation of UHC

During the same function, the CS announced that National Health Insurance Fund [NHIF] had paid Kshs 2.5 million out of a total Kshs 22.5 million owed to the facility.

She said that despite the high court ruling barring the operationalisation, implementation and enforcement of the Social Health Insurance Fund Act 2023,the reform will roll off immediately in not too long to reinforce the process of delivery of affordable health care.

“New laws in place are set to reform health insurance scheme because with the current structure of NHIF it was tailored for salaried people yet majority of Kenyans are not remunerable.Hence our intentions is to ensure each and every Kenyan is on Social Health Authority and those unable to pay for this service Government will come through for them.Today Kshs 2.5 million has been paid to the hospital and the remaining balance will be finished in the next few weeks after reconciliation of the pending figures so that whatever is payable gets sorted” she revealed

“I’ll also follow up with relevant stakeholders to ensure medical supplies and human resource is sufficient in this facility so that it discharges its mandate as expected. Local facilities are very resourceful in the delivery of affordable health care hence my plans to traverse all our dispensaries and health centres to establish gaps which we can seal through formidable partnerships between County and National governments” added CS Nakhumicha

The Chief Executive Officer of the Hospital Fr Faustine Wesonga lauded the CS for being the first Minister to visit the 70 year-old facility in the last 50 years

He urged Dr Paul Otuoma led administration to support efforts by the central Government in supporting enhancement of qualitative issuance of health care services at the local facilities.

“I want to thank the good CS for paying us a visit because this last happened in 1975 when Dr Taita Towett was the Minister. We don’t take this for granted and we’ll continue supporting the agenda by the national administration to empower health industry in Kenya.I want to suggest there should be government scheme to support needy and vulnerable patients most of whom are maternal mothers who come here seeking medication. There should be an MoU between the Catholic Church and CoG because as we speak there is little or no relationship as we’re forced to strain in bankrolling our operations due to lack of budgeting” remarked Wesonga

Founded more than a century ago by Christian missionaries, these facilities have filled a crucial gap in a public health system battling poor funding and inadequate human resources.

World Bank figures show that these hospitals provide about 30 per cent of healthcare in Kenya and up to 60 per cent in rural areas

The government ranks faith-based facilities as private and as such, they do not receive funding from the Treasury. They rely on donors, well-wishers and the user fees charged to patients, which are barely enough to run the facilities

Thursday development comes two days after the CS visited Lugulu Mission Hospital where she bailed out 100+ years facility following her intervention that saw NHIF pays 30 percent of dues owed to the Bungoma County based hospital.

“I started this initiative last year and it has explosively grown into something big and I want to say a big thank you to local football stakeholders and all the neighbouring communities for embracing this idea which kicked off as a small thing. This being second year since its inception, we have had a few players getting scouted to feature in leagues sanctioned by Football Kenya Federation and that’s my happiness because it’s part of the reasons that led to commencement of the competition. Going forward, we’ll spread out wings further by incorporating other interested teams across the whole constituency as long as they meet merit and participation eligibility requirements” he said

Among those who graced the annual event include Kenya Premier League side AFC Leopards Chief Executive Officer Albert Wesonga who appealed to other well wishers to join hands in initiating other grassroot soccer programs aimed at talent development.

  • MP Makali:Averting cases of early pregnancies in Kanduyi is one of my priorities

MP Makali:Averting cases of early pregnancies in Kanduyi is one of my priorities

Kanduyi Member of Parliament John Makali has disclosed that top on his agenda is working with relevant stakeholders including Ministry of Health [MoH] to tame cases of early pregnancies in the Constituency.

Speaking on Thursday during his meeting with Health Cabinet Secretary Nakhumicha S. Wafula, the lawmaker lauded MoH for its partnership strategies with other arms of Government like Parliament in advancing legislations aimed at empowering girl-child.

“Discussed with CS ways of partnership to hold a medical camp and hold sensitization meetings in the constituency to curb teenage pregnancies and mentorship programmes for the girl child.Besides, we deliberated on general matters of health and strengthening our institutions specifically our Bungoma Kenya Medical Training College [KMTC]” noted Makali who is also an advocate of the high court.

According to the report by Kenya National Bureau of Statistics [KEBS],Kenya has made some strides in reducing teenage pregnancies in various parts of the country.

Following the survey dated June 2023, data on teenage pregnancies for adolescents between 10 to 19 years has decreased drastically since 2018.

In the report released during the preceding
month, teenagers presenting with pregnancy at first Antenatal Care (ANC) has reduced by double in the last five years.

Earlier this year, the state affirmed its efforts in deploying all tools available to fight teenage pregnancies with CS Nakhumicha noting that she will not facilitate the availability of condoms to underage Kenyans further fronting abstinence as a precautionary measure against STDs and pregnancies among teenagers.

Speaking in Meru last month during the release of the status of the country’s HIV epidemic report at the World Aids Day celebrations,National Syndemic Disease Control Council (NSDCC) CEO Ruth Masha attributed the HIV infections due to early pregnancies to silence and Kangaroo Courts.

“While pregnancies and sexual gender-based violence is proxy to HIV infections most of these cases are reported to Kangaroo courts and instead of justice being served most of these cases are silenced. If the community plays a role in leading in the fight against misuse of our kids then we will be seeing a decrease in triple threats which are new HIV infections among the adolescents, gender based violence and teen pregnancies,” she said.

Inadequacy of youth-friendly services such as counselling and rape case prevention and lack of adequate access to sexual and reproductive health information, including access to contraceptives such as condoms have a huge effect on teenage pregnancy numbers.

The consequence of teenage pregnancy can be fatal in regard to growth and association with other people. Adolescents drop out of school, leaving to a heavier dependency burden, high maternal deaths due to stress and depression, the spread of diseases such as HIV,STD and STI and increased economic hardships as parents cater for their grand children

However, in Mombasa, only a few teams give players something to go home with.We have scouts who will be here to spot talent and eventually place them in special football programmes that will harness their skills in readiness for deployment to more professional sides in the country. We have a lot of talent in the estates but few are spotted and nurtured and that is why we have organized this tournament.” he said.

Also present during the event amongst other local leaders was area Governor Abdulswamad Nassir who promised to continue supporting the sporting activities in Mombasa for the sake of empowerment of youth in the Coastal city.

“The uniting power of sports to bring together people of all ethnic backgrouds, political persuasions and religions is undeniable.I recognize and congratulate my fellow leaders for the good work they are doing in sports and on our part, as a County Government, we will continue to supplement the growth and development of grassroots football in Mombasa by paying FKF affiliation fees for all teams” read a post on his Twitter account
