Harambee Stars beats Pakistan in Four Nations tournament in Mauritius

The national team Harambee Stars beat Pakistan 1-0 in the Four Nations Tournament at the Cote D’Or National Sports Complex in Mauritius on Wednesday.

Kakamega Homeboyz forward Moses Shumah who was making his international debut, scored the only goal of the game in the 17th minute of the game from close range.

Kenya, under the tutelage of Engin Firat, showed great composure with slick football in the first half. The players passed around the ball easily as they dominated Pakistan.

The Wednesday afternoon encounter was supposed to be East Africans’ second in the tournament, but they missed their opening game on Sunday against Djibouti due to what was termed as a ‘lack of a flight to Mauritius.

The week-long tournament is a series of international friendlies over the span of one week that involves Kenya, Mauritius, Pakistan and Djibouti.

Kenya ranked in position 102 will play hosts Mauritius in their final game of the competition. The Asian country is, however, ranked in 195th position by FIFA.

  • Bellingham completes Real Madrid move

    Bellingham completes Real Madrid move

Jude Bellingham has completed his move from Borussia Dortmund to Real Madrid.

The England midfielder, who will become his country’s most expensive player should the deal rise to the £115m price tag including add-ons, has signed a six-year deal at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Real will pay an initial £88.5m for Bellingham, who will be presented as a Los Blancos player in a presentation on Thursday morning at 11am.

Bellingham leaves Dortmund after three seasons and was named Bundesliga Player of the Year in the most recent campaign.

In a farewell statement on the Dortmund website, Bellingham said: “Thank you to everyone at BVB and to the fans for everything over the past three years.

When Bellingham was at the peak of his powers during the World Cup with England, Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti had his say on where he ranks as one of the best young midfielders in the world.

“Bellingham is one of them,” the Italian said. “But I’ll stick with my midfielders, who are very good, especially the youngsters.”

It was a reminder, despite Bellingham being one of the most sought-after midfielders ahead of this summer transfer window, that Real Madrid are a club with plenty of pedigree in that position.

Bandari,Yanga in talks over club football partnership

The local top flight Coastal side Bandari FC and Tanzania Premier League giants Yanga FC have commenced negotiations that if materialise will see them enter into football partnership geared towards strategic engagement in various areas with the intention to professionalise the local sports industry.

The development was discussed when the Vice Chairman of Dockers and long serving football stakeholder Twaha Mbarak met with Young Africans SC Chairman Engineer Hersi Ally during the Azam Cup finals at Tanga stadium on Monday.

“As Bandari we continue to strive for excellence, it is fantastic to be able to learn from Yanga FC; we are looking to pick up all we can from a club who are arguably one of the best  in the African continent as its management and performance is way above there courtesy of the vibrant Eng. Hersi who has made Yanga become a shining example of how proper organizational structure is healthy for a top side with ambition of continuously challenging for top honours in modern football. We aim to continue to share knowledge and experience, as well as building the relationship in terms of exposing our players and technical bench to the Yanga systems”  he said

“Our engagement will revolve around  club management, activities for fans, digital transformation, Marketing, sales, Economic control, and international development. With how Yanga is structured, it’s evident that they will continue to dominate the Tanzanian Premier League which has now rebranded to Ligi Ku Bara as they continue their asendency to the top of African Football. And if we emulate on them,we’ll follow suit and become continental heavyweights” he added

On and off the field, Tanzania’s oldest club looked like a pale shadow of the side that had won 27 league titles and had even fashioned a fearsome reputation on the continent.

They retained the Azam Federation Cup title after beating Azam FC 1-0 at the Mkwakwani Stadium in Tanga. This is the second title for the Jangwani Street giants this season.

Yanga also won the NBC Premier League title besides clinching a silver medal in the CAF Confederation Cup on the away goals rule despite the 2-2 aggregates.

Engineer Hersi is believed to have orchestrated Yanga’s revival when he took over the reigns.

Fan or not, overhauling Yanga’s fortunes would not be a walk in the park, considering that the team barely even afforded to keep its best players. Taking stock of the problems faced by the troubled club in 2020 was the first port of call. He did so with a civil engineer’s precision

“We signed an agreement to produce kits for the club. It solved two issues—they got money, and it resolved the kit issue. We did a good launch. We understood that it’s not business if your partner is not doing well. So, we decided to do more for the club and signed players.

“The next thing we did was change the place they camped before games. We gave them a good hotel. We secured a contract for a proper training ground,” explains the revered engineer-cum-administrator.

“The club couldn’t pay salaries, accommodation and transport. Players were terminating their contracts. They travelled by bus to games,” Eng. Hersi recalls. It was unsustainable. The club was living on donations, and we had to call fans to hire transport, air tickets, and sign players. I happened to be the chairman of the Yanga Family, whose responsibility was to solicit funds,” he was further quoted

In May this year,Twaha-the former Football Kenya Federation vice-president was appointed to the Board of Trustees of Kenya Premier League side, Bandari FC.

In a letter written by the Kenya Ports Authority Managing Director William K. Ruto, the club moved to tap the experience of the respected sports administrator and Mombasa businessman.

“In view of your vast experience in football administration both at the Coast region and at national level, I am convinced that you have the requisite skills, passion and expertise that will add value to the management of the club,” KPA MD Ruto wrote in the appointment offer.

He is dreaming big weeks after taking over. “The plan is to ensure that the team becomes a big competitor domestically and internationally. We want to ensure that Bandari FC competes in African championships while targeting special competitions between us and regional powerhouses like Yanga SC and Simba SC,” said Mbarak, adding that the strategy will ensure that the team is heard and popularised in Kenya and internationally.” noted Twaha

After parting ways with Antony ‘Modo’ Kimani who was with the team for over one year,Bandari is in the process of acquiring a new highly qualified tactician who will steer the team’s ambition from next season.

Among those whose services are being chased after include former national team Harambee Stars head coach Francis Kimanzi, current Tusker FC tactician Robert Matano and ex Kenyan International cum Kakamega Homeboyz and Ulinzi Stars gaffer Bernard Mwalala.

Temporarily, they are currently under the stewardship of a top Football Kenya Federation instructor Twahir Muhhidin who has guided the side  before in the same capacity.

  • Security a key priority at the 2023 WRC Safari Rally

Security a key priority at the 2023 WRC Safari Rally

Security for both participants and drivers will be prioritised and given special attention at the upcoming World Rally Championship (WRC) Safari Rally which is scheduled for June 22-25 in Naivasha.

According to the event organisers, security is a main concern for all in rallying as it affects both drivers and viewers who face some risk of accidents as cars involved travel at at high speeds.

Renowned navigator Abdul Sidi has indicated that overtaking or overlapping of any other competing car during a Safety Car intervention is forbidden and overtaking of a Safety Car is forbidden unless the particular competitor is signalled to overtake the Safety Car by the observer in the Safety Car.

“The driver and co-driver wear normal safety equipment (helmets and racing suits). The zero car is usually driven at almost race pace.Zero car shouldn’t be confused with the organization car or the FIA inspection car which also passes through the special stage before the rally cars but are driven much slower” wrote Abdul Sidi who has navigated some of Kenya’s legendary drivers including Patrick Njiru, and has navigated in 18 Safari Rallies, finishing 15 of them.

It was a nostalgic moment for many Kenyans, especially those old enough to have watched the WRC Safari Rally when it was last in Kenya in 2002 before readmission to the FIA world calendar in 2020

It took a lot of effort for the Safari Rally to be admitted back to the WRC circuit, and the antics by some fans will not be tolerated as this can lead to make the world body FIA reconsider that decision.

Some of the reasons given when the Safari Rally was struck off the WRC circuit, was that there was no safety for fans and drivers.

Safari Rally will set up large screens in all spectator areas for continuous engagement in the four-day event.
Television screens will be erected in selected locations for spectators to follow the actions that will be beamed live by host broadcaster KBC Channel 1.

The ICT man said the fibre optic server’s location at the expansive Flamingo flower farm is at an ideal location.

“It is 12km from the Service Park and linked with a similar line along Nairobi/Naivasha highway. The speed of 3 terabytes per seconds is enough for television live broadcast and thousands of hand held gadgets which will be used by the spectators” said WRC Safari Rally ICT Solutions Coordinator Linus Kimathi

Rally lovers continue gearing up for the biggest motoring event on the African continent with officials and volunteers at the WRC Safari putting in final touches to deliver a world-class successful event.

“This year will be historic as we will be having a special edition that will twin ours and the Acropolis rally of Greece to celebrate our heritages together. For us we want to launch our sports safari agenda of tourism and marketing Brand Kenya, riding on our sporting activities,” said Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba.

At the end of every year, the FIA and the WRC governing body evaluates the existing rules, safety measures, and other aspects of the championship to make any necessary revisions or improvements.

A total of 34 drivers including three factory teams from M-Sport Ford, Toyota Gazoo Racing and Hyundai have confirmed participating in the 70th edition of the event.

  • Congestina Achieng to be the gym instructor after completing rehabilitation

Congestina Achieng to be the gym instructor after completing rehabilitation

The former World Boxing Association middleweight champion Congestina Achieng is set to transition from a ring fighter to the gym instructor following her  completion of rehabilitation program at the Mombasa Women Empowerment Network Hospital in Miritini.

Speaking on Monday in Mombasa, former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko who has been supporting her recovery journey since 2018 said the legendary Kenyan pugilist will also be in charge of security at Salama Bling Beach resort, Kanamai.

“As Conje embarks on this new chapter of her life, she carries with her the hopes and dreams of young upcoming boxers. Her story serves as a reminder that everyone deserves a chance to prove themselves, regardless of their past or present circumstances. Conje will be the gym instructor and head security at Salama Bling Beach resort, Kanamai. Together with her sister, coach and son, we inspected the hotel that she’ll be working at and they all agreed. She will now be making a living inorder to support her family.” noted the flamboyant politician.

In March this year,Sonko had disclosed his plans of opening a training centre to be headed by the ex boxing champion nicknamed during her heydays as “Hands of Stone”.

The retired boxer was to serve as the head trainer in all the gyms in his establishments, which include Salama Bling Beach Resort and Kimeremeta Safari Lodge among others.

He however insists Congestina will not go back upcountry unless it is under emergency and she is in the company of strict supervisors watching over her.

“My initial plan for conje after healing was to employ her as the Head of security operations at the international Club Volume but changed my mind after thinking through what she has gone through before on drug and substance abuse. I don’t want her around any environment associated with drugs. We have also agreed with them they won’t go back to Siaya unless it’s too necessary and are being accompanied by our supervisors.”added his statement

The 45 year old who became the first African woman to hold an international title when she beat Ugandan Fiona Tugume to take the vacant Women International Boxing Champion (WIBF) Middleweight title suffered from mental illness since 2011 when she was diagnosed with Schizoaffective disorder.

Five years ago,Sonko airlifted Conjestina from her rural home in Siaya to Nairobi for treatment after her video in a sorry state went viral with many Kenyans pleading for help from well-wishers,in the wake of National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) committing to take the boxing legend to the best facility in Kenya.

“She is among the patriotic Kenyans who made us proud, therefore, we shall not sit down and watch her suffer. We have taken up her case and we hope she will regain her health,” Sonko explained.

The mother of one who propelled Kenya’s little-known female boxing sport to international acclaim years ago had previously been treated from depression-related illness in several facilities including Mathare Mental hospital.

Congestina’s mother, Getrude Adala has thanked Sonko for standing by her daughter who on Sunday exhibited good health and fitness levels after appearing in the same ring together with World Boxing Council (WBC) super bantamweight champion Fatuma Zarika.

“I thank Governor Sonko for always being there for Conge and not tiring to hold her hands whenever she backslided. It was sad seeing her live a miserable life because of her condition despite having brought glory back home in her prime days” she jubilantly stated

She has maintained of competitively making a comeback to the ring to reclaim WIBF middleweight title being held by Slovenian professional Ema Kozin.

“Like Mohamed Ali who went ahead to prove he was indeed the rightful ruler of the heavyweight. I’ll be back.I cannot lose my title I won in the ring by a Knock Out at a rehab centre. It has to be in the ring!” she remarked authoritatively

  • Tribute to Fred Nyongesa Ongalo by former colleague Omole Asiko

Tribute to Fred Nyongesa Ongalo by former colleague Omole Asiko

When we joined KBC as interns in the late 80’s that’s 1989 to be specific, I together with fellow trainees like Elynah Shiveka and Martin Kingasia were welcomed to the sports desk by a short, slender man who was introduced to us as Fred Nyongesa Ongalo. He was a friendly man who took us through most of the basics of sports reporting.

His speciality then was Volleyball and Handball. Apart from reporting on this two sport disciplines he also served as a PRO for their federations.

Later in 1991 when we joined the Corporation as employees after graduation, Fred was happy to share duties with us as his colleagues.

The joke in the sports desk and newsroom then was that on a day when you were rostered to work with Fred woe unto you if you delayed with the days scripts and the inserts because he religiously wrapped up his work by 3.30 pm to catch the 4 pm route 23 bus to Kangemi. Since we all respected the sports legend that he was, we made sure we adhered to his strict timelines.

Another important milestone that I recall in the years that we worked with Fred was in the early 90’s particularly after the 1992 General Elections, KBC acquired computers (old model machines) which we were told were donated by Central Bank of Kenya. We were all trained to use them since the instruction was that we were all to immediately discard the typewriters that had been our trusted tool of trade for many years. This did not go down well with Fred.

All attempts to have him use the new gimmicks simply did not work. But truth be told we all had challenges using the machines. You can be excused if you think those were standard computers that we use today. For example when you wanted to print your work you were supposed to press ‘f9’ since there was no print option on the screen!.

To make life easier for Fred we opted to retain one typewriter at one corner of the room that was set aside for him. The happy ending to this is that Fred finally caught up with the use of the computers and even trained some people how to use them. When Fred left KBC on retirement years later the sports desk was left poorer due to his vast knowledge and charisma which was sadly missed.

To state that Fred Nyongesa Ongalo made his contribution to the development of sports journalism in Kenya during his time is an understatement since the man was an household name for any Kenyan who followed KBC Radio or Television. His status in Kenya sports journalism can be placed alongside fallen giants like James Ogoma King, Harry Amol, Mohamed Juma Njuguna, Ochieng Angela, Billy Omalla and Victor Odak Omalla.

I have personally remained in touch with Fred in the course of his retirement life in Kamukuywa, in Bungoma. We have been occasionally having telephone conversations just to update one another on how we are doing. We have lost a real friend and professional scribe. May his soul Rest in Peace.

  • Sonko:Congestina Achieng will be back in competitive boxing soon

Sonko:Congestina Achieng will be back in competitive boxing soon

The former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has disclosed that the legendary Kenyan female boxer Conjestina Achieng’ will be back in the ring soon following positive recovery progress after undergoing rehabilitation at the Mombasa Women Empowerment Network Hospital in Miritini.

Sonko who on Sunday sponsored a boxing fight in an event that brought together the former Boxing champion nicknamed “Hands of Stone” and the World Boxing Council (WBC) super bantamweight champion Fatuma Zarika reiterated his commitment of supporting sporting activities in the country.

“Earlier today I was honoured to attend a friendly boxing match I organised in between two of the best female boxers kenya has ever produced, Conjestina Achieng and Fatuma Zarika. The aim of the boxing challenge that happened at Mombasa Women Hospital, Miritini was to initiate Conjestina back to her passion and talent after undergoing treatment at the Mombasa women hospital.” read part of his statement on Twitter.

“Conje’s story is one of a fighter’s spirit that refuses to be extinguished. Despite facing personal challenges and setbacks in life, she has emerged back stronger and more determined than before. Throughout her rehabilitation journey, Conjestina has shown incredible strength, both physically and mentally. Her unwavering commitment to better herself has inspired alot of youths that were almost giving up in life” he added.

Zarika lauded Sonko for walking the journey with the former World Boxing Association middleweight champion Congestina who had been suffering from mental illness since 2011 when she was diagnosed with Schizoaffective disorder.

“To all those who have stood with my sister led by the former Nairobi county boss we say a big thank you.She is one of the pioneer female boxing fighters and introduced, inspired many to this beautiful game and it feels great seeing her make this fashionable comeback to the sport.I wish her the best for the future” Zarika alias the Iron Fist remarked.

Her words were echoed by the Mombasa Women Empowerment Network Hospital Chairperson Amina Abdalla who noted that the pugilist from Siaya is fully healed after completing her rehabilitation program.

“She is now fit and fully healed and we are glad she can go back to the ring,we will continue monitoring her progress to ensure that she doesn’t backslide” said Ms Abdalla

Last year, the philanthropist politician who took the boxer to rehab after calls from his son Charlton Otieno and photos showing the deplorable state of the ex iconic sports woman went viral offered her a job as the head of security in his prestigious restaurant and clubbing joint at the Coast.

“This time round we are not releasing her to go back to Siaya. Immediately, she is discharged after fully recovering, I have already prepared a good plan for her where she will also be earning a salary. She will be the overall assistant head of security and head of all female bouncers at Club Volume Mombasa at night & during peak hours/holidays. She will also serve as the head trainer in all the gyms in our establishments (Salama Bling Beach Resort, Kimeremeta Safari Lodge etc…). As a long term measure, we are intending to open for her a boxing training centre where she will be coaching boxing.” he posted on his social media account.

She became the first African to clinch an international title as the middleweight champion in the Women’s International Boxing Federation (WIBF),an achievement that made her dominate media space, with her promoters trying to slot in interviews and endorsements in her busy schedule for companies that fought to have her as a brand

“She loved her thing. Boxing was her passion, and she was one of the most dedicated people I have worked with.In the ring, she was brutal, fast and calculating. Her opponents feared her blow, with some bowing out before end of matches. The wins were many, punctuated by camera clicks and curious boxers who wondered how she does it,” says her former coach Julius Odhiambo, reminiscing about Conjestina’s past glory.

  • CS Nakhumicha lauds Kipyegon, Omanyala for inspiring Kenyans

CS Nakhumicha lauds Kipyegon, Omanyala for inspiring Kenyans

Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha has hailed Kenyan sports men and women among them 1500m specialist Faith Kipyegon and Africa’s fastest man Ferdinand Omanyala for inspiring Kenyans through their stunning performance during the International championships across the world.

Speaking on Sunday after joining fellow parents at a children’s school sports day,the CS said the act was in the spirit of celebrating motherhood which is an esteemed privilege accorded to parents as a result of great showing by their children in their respective daily undertakings.

“Drawing motivation from two remarkable athletes, Faith Kipyegon and Ferdinand Omanyala , who continue to push boundaries and inspire us with their extraordinary achievements, I recently joined fellow parents at our children’s school sports day,” she wrote

On Friday, the 29-year-old Kipyegon  produced a mouth-watering performance to crush the world 5,000 mark at the Paris Diamond League , beating world record-holder Letesenbet Gidey of Ethiopia in the process.

This came a week after the two-time Olympic 1500m champion shattered the world record in the same race to break an eight-year-old world record at the last Diamond League meet in Florence,Italy.

The 2022 100m Commonwealth Games gold medallist Omanyala on his part finished second on Friday after posting 9.98 behind world 200m champion Noah Lyles who scorched to victory in the 100m at the Diamond League meeting in Paris clocking 9.97seconds.

Nakhumicha, on Friday joined her compatriots from Sports and Tourism ministries Ababu Namwamba and Peninah Malonza respectively during the weigh-in press conference for the boxing match pitting Kenya’s Sarah Achieng and Argentina’s former WBC featherweight champion which took place on Saturday  at the Charter Hall, Nairobi.

Albert Wesonga,a long serving football stakeholder currently in charge of Kenya Premier League side AFC Leopards as the team manager believes Nakhumicha means well for the health of players in the country through proper insurance scheme.

“She met us Kiminini,Tranz-Nzoia county during the pre-season last year in December and through a promise reiterated her commitment of ensuring that players who form an integral part of the game are protected both on and off the field. She understands the critical role played by our sportspeople in entertainment, inspiring young people, and building our nation’s economy.Lack of proper medical insurance for the players  leads to the loss of dependable players through long-term injuries which further cripple their careers” noted Wesonga

Only record Kenyan Premier League champions Gor Mahia earlier this year signed a partnership agreement with AAR to provide health insurance to the squad in an agreement which provides 40 players with inpatient coverage of Sh750,000 and outpatient coverage of Sh60,000 both on and off the field.

  • KSF Kiambu seeks to introduce swimming in informal sectors

KSF Kiambu seeks to introduce swimming in informal sectors

Kenya Swimming Federation (KSF) Kiambu County is seeking to launch a program that would see the sport introduced in institutions mostly public schools at informal sectors and slums across the county.

According KSF Kiambu Executive Committee Member Joseph Ndungu, the move is aimed at ensuring equity in terms of performance at both public and private school level thus giving students an equal opportunity to participate competitively in major championships.

“We need to keep a sustained effort to introduce young children to swimming and drive the important message that learning to swim can save your life,” said Ndungu

The experienced swimming instructor who is leading the learn to swim program amongst the public schools dubbed Swim4Life stated that the end goal of the program is to create real solutions designed to ensure children are safer in the water, especially majority youth who are at a higher risk for drowning.

The program also aim to nurture swimming talent among the kids and support them to become future champions and probably represent the Country in World Aquatics Championships.

“We have noted much enthusiasm and interest boys and girls from public schools in slum sectors have for the game but their ambition to participate in the sport has been thwarted by financial complications and lack of facilities such as swimming pools. Our plan is to introduce equal opportunities and level playing field to all swimmers irrespective of their backgrounds by developing standard swimming infrastructure in the region to serve the public at an affordable rate.We are doing everything to ensure professional coaches are seconded to public schools in a bid to achieve provision of adequate training to learners and also avert cases of kids unsafely drowning due to lack of knowhow in handling the game” he added

Mugomoini Primary School in Kiandutu Slum in Thika is one of the beneficiary of the program and their swimmers who aspire to become future champions managed to participate in Minnows Swimming Championship held over the weekend at Crawford International School.

Seahorses Aquatic Swim Club who were the overall winner of the championship and one of the most successful elite swim clubs training swimmers with national records expressed interest in supporting Mugomoini Primary School with swim wear and training aids through their Corporate Social Responsibility.

The club led by Coach Peter Mwangangi applauded the school and promised to also assist and offer some specialized training to potential swimmers in the primary school through their long term athletes development plan.

The federation’s initiative was prompted after the recent survey by Swimming Stakeholders established that nearly 90% of kids in the country do not know how to swim which is quite a huge risk.
