Let’s switch from dialogue to action, Kilifi residents urge Govt

Kilifi County residents are asking the government and relevant institutions to now switch from dialogue to action.

The call was made at the fifth edition of the intergenerational conversation at the Kibaoni Social Hall in Kilifi County.

Margaret Mwachiru  a resident of Kilifi said, “Truly any youth or woman who doesn’t have a job or a craft to enable them fend for themselves will come out. This rage is caused by the fact that they have nothing.”

Mwachiru also said that such people easily get into drug abuse and violent extremism and insisted that it’s time to move from mere dialogue.

The Police Commandant for Kilifi County Reginad Omaria congratulated the idea of intergenerational conversations organized by the National Cohesion and Integration Commission NCIC in conjunction with the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation and other stakeholders.

“Dialogue is a good step that we have taken; the second step should be listening to each other, finding out our differences, and come up with lasting solutions,” said Omaria.

John Mawasit from the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission suggested that youth be included in all important decisions in both the National and County governments, instead of just leaving them at the level of voters.

Mama Tumaini Elisha, a community elder, asked the political class to come together and find opportunities for the youth to prevent them from engaging in protests.

The National Cohesion and Integration Commission came up with the fora for conversations to tame the widening rift between generations.

The sittings have been held in Marsabit, Nairobi, Kisumu, Busia, and Kilifi Counties with the sixth edition expected to be in Taita Taveta County.

The first four sittings were held in Marsabit, Nairobi, Kisumu and Busia counties.

The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC), in conjunction with the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC), launched the engagement this year to promote dialogue, address generational gaps, and foster reconciliation between younger and older generations.

The initiative provides a platform for open communication, aiming to build trust and allow youth to voice their concerns about issues like unemployment and a lack of opportunities.

Today’s panel comprises Brian Ngugi Kamande, the immediate former student leader of Pwani University, who will represent the youth. Other panellists include Millicent Okatch, Director of Research and Education Management at NCIC; Bishop Lewa, representing the clergy; and Miss Lillian Wangeci Ngine.

  • TikTok remains popular social media platform among young people

TikTok remains popular social media platform among young people

TikTok is the most preferred social media platform and is still gaining more ground especially among the young. This year’s report by Reuters Institute on Digital News indicates that most people nowadays prefer video-based content distributed on platforms such as TikTok, Instagram and YouTube as opposed to other forms of content.

This puts more pressure on both ad-based and subscription business models of news organisations at a time when both household and company spending is being squeezed.

The platform that originates from China is the fastest growing social network according to Reuters’ survey where it is used by 44% of youth aged between 18 and 24. TikTok is mostly used in parts of Asia, Latin America and Africa. Users of this platform mostly follow celebrities and social media influencers while ignoring journalists and media houses.

Facebook on the other hand keeps loosing influence as a source of news. Even so the report indicates that people have generally lost interest in news and do not trust news owing to the disconnect between journalism and the wider public. Only 28% said they accessed news through Facebook in 2023 compared to 42% in 2016.

Twitter is said to have remained relatively stable in most countries after the acquisition by Elon musk, with the alternative use of nets like the extremely low Mastodon.

The Reuters DNR 2023 is the 12th second annual report by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism (RISJ) and the 9th report to feature information on Portugal, in which 46 countries participate.

In June last year the jury sided with Depp and the 60-year-old actor was awarded 10 million dollars in compensatory damages and a further 5 million dollars in punitive damages. Punitive damages were later reduced to 350 000 dollars in comliance with the state’s statutory cap.

Depp was also found liable by the same jury that awarded him victory in the case, citing comments made by Depp’s lawyer, Adam Waldman, referring to Heard’s claims as a “hoax”. He was also ordered to pay 2 million dollars in compensatory damages.
