8 Filipino seafarers detained by Malaysia

Eight Filipino seafarers have been detained by Malaysia over alleged violations of Malaysian immigration laws and regulations, the Philippines’ Migrant Workers (DMW) said Friday.

DMW Secretary Hans Cacdac said the crew members are being detained in a police station in Kota Tinggi, a town in Johor, a state in southern Malaysia.

“Our labor attache and DMW lawyer in Malaysia visited the eight jailed seafarers and raised the defense of good faith before the investigation officer,” he said in a statement.

“We have been informed that the results of the investigation will be out soon,” Cacdac added.
Cacdac said his department will investigate the shipowner to determine the circumstances that led to the seafarers’ detention.
